Don't slip up this winter be prepared
Rock salt is used for treating roads, footways and cycletracks and although it has a gritty appearance it is not a "grit".
The HSE state that: ‘To reduce the risk of slips on ice, frost or snow, you need to… Identify the outdoor areas used by pedestrians most likely to be affected by ice… and use grit’
As a premises owner and occupier it is your duty to comply with Health & Safety at work,1994 and HSE Preventing Slips and Trips at Work guidance (2005). Ensure peace of mind and adhere to HSE requirements.
The salt lowers the freezing point of moisture on the road surface. The salt needs to be crushed by the weight of traffic or foot traffic and then dissolves. It is less effective at temperatures below minus five degrees centigrade (-5°C) and has virtually no effect below -10°C.
There are many blends available, our most popular Rock salt is a blend of 90% pure Sodium Chloride with the remaining insolubles being Keuper Marl, allowing a unique friction quality thereby ideal as a highway de-icer.
For domestic footpaths and car parks we would recommend our Stay Safe EcoGrit
